THE PROBLEM IN NUMBERS
- Roughly 1.1 million Americans are classified as blind
About 130,000 veterans are legally blind, over 1 million have low vision - Braille literacy fell from about 50 percent of blind students in the 1960s to about 9 percent today. Employment of blind people fell during that time.
- Professional braille equipment runs upward of $20,000
- Adults who lose vision later in life have no structured national braille literacy program.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Alan Dunbar spent a career as a network systems engineer, associate professor and cybersecurity architect after serving in the Army. On September 9, 2024, a stroke took nearly all of his vision. He learned braille over the following 18 months, attending the West Palm Beach VA Blind Rehabilitation Center twice, and built the dictionary from his own training notes when nothing comparable existed. He founded Braille Press LLC to publish it.
